How to Run a Tulsa SEO Competitor Audit You Can Repeat
Separate Maps, organic pages, and directories before deciding who is actually ahead.

Somebody searches from a laptop, takes a screenshot, and declares that a competitor owns Tulsa.
Slow down a little.
Which search? From where? Was the result an ad, a Maps listing, a company website, or a directory recommending companies? If those details are missing, the screenshot is an observation with most of its context removed.
A useful Tulsa SEO competitor audit starts by deciding what you’re comparing. Then it records enough detail that another person can repeat the work. You can do that without turning the report into a science fair project.
What this local review actually observed
On September 16, 2026, TMG reviewed Google browser results for five phrases: “tulsa digital marketing,” “marketing consulting tulsa,” “best marketing company tulsa,” “seo company tulsa,” and “marketing agency tulsa.”
This was a small, one-session exploratory review of one industry. The browser location was not independently fixed to a neutral Tulsa search point. It was not a statistically representative study, a mobile survey, or a permanent ranking of Tulsa agencies. The observations below are dated examples, not endorsements.
| Query | Examples of agency domains observed in the results |
|---|---|
| tulsa digital marketing | tulsainternetmarketingservice.com, sooner.marketing, thriveagency.com |
| marketing consulting tulsa | arrowheadconsulting.com, sooner.marketing, themontgomerygroup.us |
| best marketing company tulsa | sooner.marketing, chattertulsa.com, myersmm.com |
| seo company tulsa | onfirstpage.com, seo.co, newmedia.com |
| marketing agency tulsa | sooner.marketing, chattertulsa.com, littlefieldagency.com |
Directories and discussion sites also appeared. The mix changed across queries. That supports a modest conclusion: a competitor list built from one broad search would have missed relevant businesses and result types in this sample. It does not establish market share, revenue, client quality, or which agency is “best.”
Start with the service, then the buying question
Use the services customers can actually buy from you. A Tulsa commercial contractor and a Tulsa emergency plumber may share a broad industry label while competing for very different inquiries.
Build a short set that includes the main service, a specific service variation, and the question a buyer asks while evaluating a provider. Keep the words people use, even when two phrases seem similar to you. In our agency sample, consulting and SEO searches introduced different companies.
If you serve Broken Arrow, Jenks, or Owasso, make those separate research rows where relevant. Don’t quietly substitute a Tulsa search for evidence about every surrounding market. Record the places you really serve and the particular location setting used for each check.
The output is a manageable query list with a reason for every row. Fifty nearly identical phrases can create a large report without producing fifty distinct decisions.
Keep result types in separate columns
Maps visibility and a ranking website page are different observations. So is a directory page that lists multiple providers. Track each where it matters, but keep the categories explicit.
Google identifies relevance, distance, and prominence as major factors in local results. That is one reason location context belongs in a local comparison. A single check cannot demonstrate universal Maps coverage across the Tulsa area. Google explains local ranking factors.
Use a worksheet with query, date, device, location setting, result type, domain, exact landing page, and a short observation. If a tracking tool includes local-pack positions in its main number, label that setting. Don’t present the resulting number as an organic-only website rank.
Also keep paid placement separate. Seeing an advertiser above an organic result does not tell you that the advertiser earned the higher organic position.
Track the page that wins, not just the company
Open the relevant result and identify what the page helps a buyer do. Is it a dedicated service page? A broad homepage? A comparison article? A directory profile?
Then look for useful differences: a clearer service description, specific project evidence, understandable process information, or a more direct inquiry path. Record the observation rather than guessing what caused the ranking.
For example, “the page explains commercial service coverage and links to a relevant project” is observable. “Google ranks it because the owner knows someone” is not useful research.
A competitor with more words may have answered more questions. It may also have repeated itself. Your task is to find the missing answer, not match the paragraph count.
Turn the audit into a short work queue
Choose the page you already have that best matches each buying task. A clear existing page may need stronger evidence or better links from related content. Creating a second page for almost the same purpose can make the site harder to maintain without helping the reader.
Prioritize findings by relevance to the business, confidence in the evidence, and the work required. A broken inquiry path on a useful service page can deserve attention before a new article about a marginal topic.
Write each action so someone could finish it: add an approved project example, explain the service boundary, connect a related guide, or clarify what happens after an inquiry. “Improve SEO” is a department name disguised as a task.
Repeat the conditions and compare outcomes
Save the original worksheet. On the next review, use the same core query set and settings. If you change the device, location, or result types, record that change rather than quietly comparing unlike numbers.
Pair the visibility review with first-party inquiry records. A search tool’s estimated traffic is not the same thing as measured visits, and a visit is not a qualified opportunity. Keep those stages visible when discussing whether the work is helping.
This audit complements the broader Tulsa marketing landscape article. Its job is narrower: give you a repeatable method for reviewing your own market. If you need help turning the findings into changes, connect SEO work with measurement.
A good competitor report should leave you with better priorities. A screenshot that makes everyone anxious is a much easier deliverable. Ask for the useful one.
